Mary Meeker (a partner at venture capital company, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers) just presented her iconic internet trends 2016 report.
This year, Mary identifies the rise in ad blocking, voice search & commerce, chat bot payments, tech acquisitions by non-tech corporates, cybercrime, consumer data privacy concerns, and how to respond to the slowdown in the 5 epic global growth drivers of the past 20 years.
Here’s Mary’s presentation.

This year over half of all advertising is expected to be online. Picking up on a theme in Mary’s report, Nic Newman’s Journalism, Media and Technology Predictions, 2016 report sets out why ad-blocking is compounding the already falling ROI of online ads. He suggests more ads in videos because they’re harder to block (hmm), and striving for better ads (yay!) There are of course many effective alternatives to interruption marketing – more on one of them below!
“Growth creates complexity, and complexity is the silent killer of growth.” That’s the upshot of research by two Bain & Co partners (Chris Zook & James Allen). Specifically they found that just 1 company in nine has sustained more than a minimal level of growth over the past decade. Companies that do sustain strong growth have what they call a founder’s mentality. And that means three things: 1) Insurgency, 2) Owner’s mindset, 3) Frontline obsession. Startups need to build the founder’s mentality from day 1.
Free Traffic for New Websites
SEO of course, is a time-honoured alternative to online ads. Much advice however for how to generate more organic search traffic is outdated. One of the most effective ways to build organic traffic is to build backlinks to your site. Neil Patel explains four ways to do this for a new website.
Setting the Record Straight
I’ve noticed a number of misconceptions lately around what Crowdfunding means for startups. Here’s a good round-up of some common myths from CrowdCube‘s blog.
What is Decentralised Venture Capital?
Tomasz Tunguz (VC) has some clear-headed thoughts on what decentralising venture capital means – given the recent chatter about The DAO.
More Thoughts on The DAO
Fred Wilson (VC), as always, shares some insightful thoughts on The DAO over at his blog. Well worth reading – as are the comments.
The recent Cambrian explosion in AI, chat bots and natural language processing is giving rise to the Intelligent Personal Assistant. Will the likes of Cortana, Siri, Amazon Echo, Google Now and Facebook M replace the website as the primary interface to your business? Tom Anthony makes a compelling case why we should be investigating this ‘massive’ opportunity right now.
Voice in Financial Services
The macro voice trend in Mary’s report is set to unleash a revolution within Financial Services argues Jim Marous.
Disruption is Not Strategy
Jerry Neumann argues that “there are better ways than disruption to think about whether you can succeed at building a business with a new technology. In fact, there are few worse ways.” And that “new companies disrupt incumbents not when they introduce new technology, but when they help create new markets.” Required reading.
